Architect: Le Corbusier

Area: Europe

Welcome to the world of Le Corbusier, where architectural innovation meets timeless design. In this intimate interview, we uncover the roots of his pioneering vision, his quest to harmonize space with the human spirit, and his enduring influence on the modern skyline. Dive into the dialogue with the man whose designs redefined urban living.

Q: Let’s start with your background. How did you get started in the architectural industry?

A: I was born in the Swiss Jura mountains, a region renowned for precision watchmaking, and was surrounded by the meticulous craft from an early age. At 13, I left primary school to pursue the art of enameling and engraving watch faces, my father’s trade, at the École des Arts Décoratifs in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Under the mentorship of Charles L’Eplattenier, I was introduced to art history, drawing, and the aesthetics of Art Nouveau. From 1907 to 1911, I embarked on a transformative journey across Europe and the Mediterranean, absorbing the architectural heritage and contemporary movements of the time. This period was a crucible for my development, exposing me to the works of pioneers like Auguste Perret and Peter Behrens, whose modernist approaches profoundly influenced my own. That’s how I began my journey into architecture.

Q: Can you describe your current company or organization and your role?

A: As an independent architect, designer, and urban planner, I am not affiliated with any specific firm or organization. My work spans across Europe, Japan, India, and the Americas, constantly searching for new opportunities to push the boundaries of architecture and explore the possibilities of urban planning.

Q: What are your professional aspirations?

A: My professional aspirations have always been rooted in the belief that architecture is more than just constructing walls; it’s about creating spaces that elevate the human experience. I aspire to design environments that blend functionality and beauty, with spaces that resonate with the rhythm of life. My goal is to continue pushing modern architecture’s boundaries and create aesthetically pleasing structures that are deeply connected to their purpose and environment.

Q: Do you have a secondary field of expertise that complements your work in architecture?

A: My contributions to urban planning are significant in addition to my work in architecture. As a founding member of the Congrès International d’Architecture Moderne (CIAM), I have played a key role in shaping the discourse on modern architecture and urban planning. Along with that, I also prepared the master plan for Chandigarh in India.

Q: Can you discuss any notable projects? How would you measure their success?

A: The Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut is one of my most cherished projects. It provided a unique opportunity to redefine sacred space in the modern era departing from traditional church architecture, featuring an unconventional roof and curved walls to evoke a sense of the divine.

A project’s success goes beyond aesthetics and functionality – it’s about impact. With the Chapel, I aimed to create a place that inspires contemplation and spiritual connection. The feedback from visitors, their sense of awe and peace, is a testament to its success. The Chapel embodies more than mere functionality; it’s a work of art that interacts with light and landscape, offering a unique experience to each visitor.

Q: What is the current architectural trend or philosophy that you align with? How do you stay current with architectural trends and developments?

A: I am deeply aligned with the concept of the “Radiant City.” The Radiant City emphasizes efficient transportation and abundant green spaces. It envisions wide avenues, interconnected neighborhoods, and a harmonious balance between residential, commercial, and recreational areas. At its core, the Radiant City seeks to enhance the quality of life by optimizing urban planning. It promotes accessibility, social cohesion, and environmental sustainability.

I prioritize lifelong learning and collaboration with my team to stay current. I explore case studies from around the world – both historical and modern – to keep myself informed. Adapting to evolving needs and global challenges is critical.

Q: What aspects of team management and leadership are essential to successful projects and fulfilling customer satisfaction?

A: The essence of successful team management and leadership in architecture lies in synthesizing diverse talents and harmonious collaboration between all stakeholders involved. It is vital to foster an environment where creativity and innovation are encouraged, and discipline and precision are uncompromised.

Leadership is about setting an aspirational and attainable vision. It’s about guiding the team towards a shared goal while respecting and utilizing each member’s strengths. A successful project results from clear communication, shared objectives, and mutual respect among all parties.

Customer satisfaction is achieved when we listen attentively to the needs and aspirations of those we serve. Meeting requirements is not enough – we must exceed them by delivering thoughtful, sustainable solutions that elevate the quality of life. Success is seen in how much our work resonates with the people and the place for which it is designed.

Q: Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring architects?

A: My counsel is to remember that architecture is an act of profound optimism. Each line you draw and each space you conceive carries the potential to enrich lives and elevate the spirit. Be bold in your designs while ensuring that your boldness stems from a place of purpose and necessity.

Study the past to understand the timeless principles that underlie great architecture, not to replicate them. Look to nature for inspiration; it is the ultimate designer. Strive to create harmony between your structures and their surroundings.

Never stop learning. Architecture is an ever-evolving dialogue between society and space, as it is about understanding human behavior and needs as it is about concrete and steel.

Always hold fast to your ideals and integrity. The path of innovation is often met with resistance, but the future of architecture rests upon the shoulders of visionary individuals who design buildings, construct dreams, and forge new horizons for humanity.
